Priority Action Areas

At their meeting in New Orleans, USA, in December, 1998, the Ministers Responsible for Transportation from the Summit of the Americas countries agreed on the following Priority Action Areas for follow-up under the Western Hemisphere Transport Initiative. In brackets are those countries or organizations tasked with leading work in each area.

  • Area 1: Action Plan for Integration [Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean]

  • Area 2: Transport Statistics System for the Americas [Canada, with the assistance of Jamaica]

  • Area 3: Disaster Response Plan [Costa Rica, Honduras and the Organization of American States, with the assistance of CARICOM]

  • Area 4: Compendium of Safety and Incident Response Best Practices [United States of America, with the assistance of Jamaica]

  • Area 5: Best Practices Report on Transportation Infrastructure Financing [Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank]

  • Area 6: Capacity-building Seminars [Costa Rica, the Organization of American States and Jamaica]

  • Area 7: Information Exchange on Transportation Technologies [United States of America]

  • Area 8: Conference on the Effects of the Year 2000 Computer Problem on Transportation Systems throughout the Region [Mexico]
